Jagath Wellawatte and a team of intellectuals take over operation to bring Basil
to the leadership

Wellawatte is currently the head of the State Mortgage and Investment Bank.
Wellawatte, is a former lecturer of the Sri Jayewardenapura University, and the
team of professionals headed by him include 22 university lecturers.
The committee meets once a week to decide on Basil’s political activities and
Basil had also met
with the committee once every two weeks to receive their recommendations on how
best to carry out his political work.
The committee had last week discussed at length on how to defeat the proposed
constitutional amendment to extend the number of terms a President could hold
office, as it would hamper Basil’s political future.
It had been decided by the committee to build a public sentiment against the
proposed constitutional amendment by getting articles against the extension of
the terms of office of a President written by intellectuals published in the
print media and conducting electronic media programmes also on the subject.
Basil had noted that Ministers Champika Ranawaka and Wimal Weerawansa’s
support could also be taken to build a sentiment against the proposed
constitutional amendment.
