The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay says there are allegations regarding human rights violations during the war in Sri Lanka and she has no confidence in the committees appointed by the government of Sri Lanka to look into alleged human rights violations, and provide justice to victims.

Speaking further the High Commissioner has said such objectives would be better served by establishing an independent international accountability mechanism that would enjoy public confidence, both in Sri Lanka and elsewhere. Expressing her discontent regarding committees appointed by the government of Sri Lanka Ms. Pillay states "Concrete initiatives must now follow to provide justice and redress to victims and generally to promote accountability and longer-term reconciliation."

Opposing the ‘post-war reconciliation commission’ created by the government, she points out that government of Sri Lanka had appointed several committees but no justice was done to the victims.
