Dwaraka’s Parents Complain To Human Rights Commission
A complaint has been filed at the Human Rights Commission by parents of Rasiah Dwaraka and Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) requesting investigations against Dwaraka, who is being detained at Boosa Detention camp since her arrest on 12.11.2009 by Terrorist Investigation Division, to be expedited and release her immediately.
Convener of IUSF Udul Premaratne speaking to the media said, “Dwaraka, a student, has been in detention for more than six months. The Terrorist Investigations Division had stated investigations regarding her had been completed. However, no action has been taken to release her.
As a result of our mediation, as the IUSF, she was allowed to sit the examination at the University while being detained at Peradeniya Police Station. She has passed those examinations with merit. She is also a very good sportswoman. Detaining her despite investigations against her had been completed is a violation of her fundamental rights. As such, we took measures to complain to the Human Rights Commission.
When the war is over and a very good opportunity has been created to build national unity, detention of Tamil youth would deprive that opportunity. Three more students of Jaffna University are being detained. Nearly ten thousand youths from the North are being detained as terrorist suspects. Investigations regarding them are conducted very sluggishly. Hence, we, as the students’ movement, demand that the government expedites these investigations as a precedent to building national unity.”
Dwaraka’s parents lodged a complaint at the TDI as well.
