A Doha court of first instance has sentenced three Sri Lankan workers to seven years’ imprisonment for possessing a kilogram of marijuana for trade purpose.

According to the court papers, the accused, all in their 30s, were trapped on December 24, 2008 in an operation by the anti-drug unit following a tip-off.

The court heard that two policemen, who pretended to be potential customers, arranged a meeting with the first suspect and offered to buy a quantity of the contraband for QR25,000. The bank notes used in the transaction were photocopied by the policemen.

The two other suspects were caught at a later stage. A search of their house yielded more of the contraband, the court was told. In addition to the seven-year imprisonment, the three Sri Lankans were also fined QR200,000.
